Presenters

Michael K. Lee is the Director of Conservation for the Ethering Conservation Center in Greensboro, NC. Mr. Lee received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs NY and his Master of Arts degree, specializing in conservation and preservation from the State University College at Buffalo. Mr. Lee is a member of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC), serving on the Book and Paper group, and the Photographic Materials group.

Steve Max Weiss is Head of Southern Folklife Collection/the Media Archivist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Manuscripts Department. Mr. Weiss received his Bachelor of Science degree in Audio Technology from the American University, Washington, DC and his Master of Information and Library Studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Mr. Weis has consulted for the Highlander Research and Education Center, November 2001, Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, March 200 and the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, March 200. Mr. Weiss was the recipient of the Brenda McCallum Prize.
Nyoni Collins is the founder of Sanofa Center, whose primary mission is to increase the documentation of African American community history. Sankofa offers workshops and presentation on ways in which this can be accomplished within the community. In 2000, Collins initiated the North Carolina Rosenwald Schools Community Project in association with Sankofa Center. The Project has partnered with community groups and state agencies to bring awareness of the rich legacy of Rosenwald schools in our state. The first state-wide conference was held on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University. In 2003 the Project received a prestigious Albert Ray Newsome Award from the state for outstanding historical activities. In addition to her pioneering work in North Carolina, Collins serves on the national committee for Rosenwald schools preservation and the North Carolina Federation of Historical Societies.

Jane Johnson is an Information Specialist in the Carolina Room for the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Ms. Johnson received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Sociology from Centenary College of Louisiana and her Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of South Carolina. Ms. Johnson is a member of the Olde Mecklenburg Genealogical Society and the Mecklenburg Historical Association. Ms. Johnson handles reference questions, and does research and exhibits for the Carolina Room's website, www.CMStory.org.
