The first recognized student paper to be published on the campus was called The Argus.  It was first published in 1904 with Holly Blanton Taylor as Editor-in-Chief.  The paper began as a 5 ½ x 11-inch journal with twenty-four pages.

Both faculty and students contributed material for this paper. There are no records to establish the exact termination date of The Argus publication. However, publication was most likely discontinued before November of 1920, since The Biddle Outlook appeared as the official student voice in that same year.

According to the information available, The University Student began publication in 1924, following the last issue of the Biddle Outlook.  The change of the name of the institution in 1923 from Biddle University to Johnson C. Smith University necessitated a change in the name of the student paper.

During the 1920s, another student paper, The Johnson C. Smith University High School Messenger, was published on a monthly basis. The publication was short-lived, since the High School Department was discontinued in 1929.
