DESCRIPTION: Dr. James Ward Seabrook’s materials are included in the collection of the Office of the President, which is housed in the Inez Moore Parker Archives and Research Center at Johnson C. Smith University. The Office of the President Collection contains speeches, manuscripts, photographs, and other documents of individuals who have served as President of Johnson C. Smith University.

HISTORICAL NOTE: Dr. James Ward Seabrook was the seventh president of Johnson C. Smith University from 1956 to 1957. He was born in Sumter County, South Carolina on November 6, 1886 to Lucy Hadden Seabrook and Morris James Seabrook, a Presbyterian clergyman. Dr. Seabrook received an A.B. degree from Johnson C. Smith University in 1909 and a M.A. degree from Columbia University in 1925. He continued his educational studies at the graduate level at Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and New York University. He received an honorary doctorate from Johnson C. Smith University.
Dr. Seabrook’s teaching experiences included terms at Winston-Salem Teachers College, Kittrell College, and Johnson C. Smith University where he organized the Department of Education. In July of 1933 he became vice-principal and dean of Fayetteville State Teachers College. He became President Emeritus of Fayetteville State in June of 1956. Dr. Seabrook was a trustee of Johnson C. Smith University and served on numerous committees and organizations related to the school and to education in general. He also received an appointment to President Hoover’s White House Conference. Dr. Seabrook was the first African-American to be appointed to the North Carolina Employment Security Commission under Governor Terry Sanford.
Dr. Seabrook came out of retirement to serve as interim president of Johnson C. Smith University after the death of Dr. Hardy Liston.
