DESCRIPTION: Dr. Hardy Liston’s materials are included in the collection of the Office of the President, which is housed in the Inez Moore Parker Archives and Research Center at Johnson C. Smith University. The Office of the President Collection contains speeches, manuscripts, photographs, and other documents of individuals who have served as President of Johnson C. Smith University.

HISTORICAL NOTE:  Dr. Hardy Liston served as the sixth president of Johnson C. Smith University from 1947 to 1956. He was born on March 30, 1889 in Fairfield County, South Carolina to Maggie Davis and Huey Lord Liston. He graduated from Biddle University in 1911 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  He received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1925 and a Master of Arts degree in 1928 from the University of Chicago.  He received honorary degrees from Johnson C. Smith University, Maryville College, and Lincoln University.

Dr. Liston taught in the public schools of Spartanburg, South Carolina from 1912 to 1913.  He was the administrative assistant and math teacher at Kittrell College in Kittrell, North Carolina from 1913 to 1915.  He went on to teach at Slater Normal School (now Winston-Salem State University) where he was a member of the faculty for 16 years. He served as dean from 1925 to 1931.  He moved to Tennessee and served as dean of Knoxville College from 1931 to 1943.

In 1943, became the executive vice-president of Johnson C. Smith University.  Upon the retirement of Dr. Henry L. McCrorey in 1947, Dr. Liston was elected President of the University.  During his administration, improvements in the physical plant of the university totaled more than one million dollars.  These improvements included the erection of the Henry Lawrence McCrorey Theological Building, the Central Heating Plant, and the renovation of the interior of Carter Hall.  The number of professional faculty grew, the curriculum was revised, and new departments were added.  Dr. Liston was an elder in the Presbyterian Church, and was an active member of several church-related organizations.
