TITLE: Reverend William F. Johnson

COVERAGE: 1886 to 1891

DESCRIPTION: Reverend William F. Johnson’s materials are included in the collection of the Office of the President, which is housed in the Inez Moore Parker Archives and Research Center at Johnson C. Smith University. The Office of the President Collection contains speeches, manuscripts, photographs, and other documents of individuals who have served as President of Johnson C. Smith University.

HISTORICAL NOTE: Dr. William F. Johnson was born on March 16, 1838 in Cadiz, Ohio. He graduated from Jefferson College in 1854. On June 13, 1859 he was appointed to the North India Mission. In 1860 he graduated from Western Theological Seminary and became an ordained minister. Dr. Johnson decided to become a missionary shortly after receiving news that his older brother Albert and seven fellow-missionaries had been killed in Fatehgrah. In 1861, he was assigned  to the mission field in Allahabad, India to continue the work that his brother had begun. During his tenure as a professor in India, Dr. Johnson published over two hundred books and tracts in Urdu and Hindi. 

While on sabbatical from 1884 to 1891, Dr. Johnson served as president of Johnson C. Smith University. He returned to India in 1891 to continue his service until his retirement in 1922.  Dr. Johnson died in Landour, India on June 29, 1926.
