DESCRIPTION: Reverend William Alexander Holliday’s materials are included in the collection of the Office of the President, which is housed in the Inez Moore Parker Archives and Research Center at Johnson C. Smith University. The Office of the President Collection contains speeches, manuscripts, photographs, and other documents of individuals who have served as President of Johnson C. Smith University.

HISTORICAL NOTE: William Alexander Holliday was born in Paris, Kentucky on December 30, 1841.  In 1862, he graduated from Princeton University and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1865.  He received a doctorate in Sacred Theology from Princeton and a doctorate in Divinity from Lafayette College. Dr. Holliday later served as a member of the Board of Trustees at Lafayette College. He was ordained in 1866 by the Presbytery of North River in New York.  His first pastorate was for the Bethlehem Church in Orange County, New York. Dr. Holliday founded Prospect Heights Church in Brooklyn, New York.  

Dr. Holliday served as president of Henry J. Biddle Memorial Institute from 1884 to 1885.

He lectured on the Presbyterian Church Polity at Hartford Theological Seminary from 1900 to 1907 and served on the Board of Trustees of Lincoln University in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Holliday died in Plainfield, New Jersey on January 21, 1924.
