DESCRIPTION: Dr. Wilbert Greenfield’s materials are included in the collection of the Office of the President, which is housed in the Inez Moore Parker Archives and Research Center at Johnson C. Smith University. The Office of the President Collection contains speeches, manuscripts, photographs, and other documents of individuals who have served as President of Johnson C. Smith University.

HISTORICAL NOTE: On July 18, 1933, Wilbert Greenfield was born in Seven Springs, North Carolina. After completing high school, Greenfield continued his education at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University. While at A&T, he was an active member of the Air Force R.O.T.C. Drill Team, the Scabbard and Blade Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Society, and the Honor Air Society. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Dr. Greenfield entered the University of Iowa’s College of Medicine. He received a Master of Science degree in 1958 and his Ph. D. in 1960.
Dr. Greenfield began his professional career in 1960 as Head of the Department and Professor of Biology at Jackson State College, in Jackson, Mississippi. In 1967, he was promoted to Associate Dean of the School of Liberal Studies. Three months later he became Dean of Academic Affairs. He actively participated in civic affairs in the Jackson community, and served on several boards including the Jackson Urban League, YMCA, the State Educational Television, and the Interagency Commission on Mental Illness and Retardation. From 1973 to 1982, Dr. Wilbert Greenfield served as the tenth president of Johnson C. Smith University.
