DESCRIPTION: To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the institution, Paul S. Keen Jr. was commissioned in 1966 to paint a mural illustrating the rich history of Johnson C. Smith University.

HISTORICAL NOTE: Paul S. Keene, Jr. an artist from Philadelphia painted the 8 1/2 x 20 foot mural depicting the rich history of Johnson C. Smith University. It took 2 1/2 years for Keene to complete the mural, which was dedicated on April 7, 1968.

This vibrant and colorful mural, presenting scenes relevant to the founding, growth, and development of the institution during its 100 years of existence, is located on the first floor of the James B. Duke Library at Johnson C. Smith University.
