HISTORICAL NOTE: Mrs. Jane M. Smith, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, had the task of investing her husband’s money in a “worthwhile cause” in accordance with his request. Through her association with Dr. McCrorey, she became aware of the needs of the Biddle University. From 1921 to 1929, she contributed $400,000 for the erection of buildings and equipment on the campus. She also contributed $302,500 in endowed funds for the University.
In 1923, the name of the Biddle University changed to Johnson C. Smith University in honor of Mr. Johnson C. Smith.
