This collection focuses on the early benefactors who gave land and money to support the growth and development of the Henry J. Biddle Memorial Institute, which became Johnson C. Smith University.

HISTORICAL NOTE: In 1923, the name of the Biddle University changed to Johnson C. Smith University in honor of Mr. Johnson C. Smith.
Mr. Johnson C. Smith attended Washington and Jefferson College. Mr. Smith operated the Hiawatha Drug Store in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He was one of the pioneers of street railway construction and the director of the People’s Bank in McKeesport. Mr. Smith possessed substantial real estate holdings and was one of the co-founders of the McKeesport Tin Plate Company. Mr. Smith died in 1919.
