DESCRIPTION:  The original site of the Henry J. Biddle Memorial Institute was on the corner of 4th and D Street. Biddle Institute began operations on its present site on Beatties Ford Road in 1869. The campus consisted of the Institution Building, two professors homes, and three small student cottages called Asia, Africa, and Australia. Biddle Hall, Carter Hall, the Carnegie Building, Stone Gate, and Dr. George E. Davis are among the oldest buildings on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University.
