DESCRIPTION: Dr. George Edward Davis’ materials are part of the Academic Departments collection, which is housed in the Inez Moore Parker Archives and Research Center at Johnson C. Smith University. HISTORICAL NOTE: Dr. George E. Davis was born in Wilmington, NC, on March 24, 1863.  He graduated from Biddle University in 1883 and then studied medicine at Howard University for two years.  In 1885, he became the first black professor to join the all white administration at Biddle. He became Dean of the Faculty in 1905 and held this post for fifteen years. Dr. Davis earned his doctorate degree from Biddle University and was a professor in the fields of mathematics, natural science, and sociology for thirty-five years. 

In 1921, Dr. Davis resigned from Biddle University to join the staff of the North Carolina State Department of Education as the state agent for the Rosenwald Fund. As the state agent, he was responsible for working with local community groups to raise funds to build black schools. In 1932, it was reported that he raised $666, 736 from black communities throughout the state of North Carolina. 

Dr. Davis retired in 1935 at the age of seventy-three, leaving a legacy of unparalleled achievement in raising money for black education in the state.
