DESCRIPTION:  The Benefactors Collection is housed in the Inez Moore Parker Archives and Research Center at Johnson C. Smith University. This collection focuses on the early benefactors who gave land and money to support the growth and development of Henry J. Biddle Memorial Institute, which became Johnson C. Smith University in 1923.

HISTORICAL NOTE: James Buchanan Duke was born on December 23, 1856 in Orange County, North Carolina. Mr. Duke lived in Charlotte, North Carolina and founded Duke Power Company, which is one of the major utility companies in America today.

Johnson C. Smith University became one of the privileged institutions to receive a permanent endowment from Mr. James Buchanan Duke in 1924.  Duke Hall, the first female dormitory and the James B. Duke Memorial Library were named in his memory.
