DESCRIPTION: The Benefactors Collection is housed in the Inez Moore Parker Archives and Research Center at Johnson C. Smith University. This collection focuses on the early benefactors who gave land and money to support the growth and development of Henry J. Biddle Memorial Institute, which became Johnson C. Smith University in 1923.

HISTORICAL NOTE: Colonel Myers was born on December 17, 1813 in Anson County, North Carolina. He studied law under Governor Graham of Hillsboro, North Carolina and became solicitor of the county court in Charlotte, North Carolina. Colonel Myers also served as the president of the Atlantic Tennessee, and the Ohio railroad, and he was one of the founders of the First National Banks of Charlotte.
In 1867, Colonel Myers donated eight acres of land for the re-location of the Henry J. Biddle Memorial Institute, which became Johnson C. Smith University in 1923.
