HISTORICAL NOTE: Major Henry Jonathan Biddle was born on May 16, 1817 to Thomas and Christine Williams Biddle.
Major Biddle was elected to the First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary on April 4, 1848. He was an Adjutant General of the Pennsylvania Reserves with the rank of Colonel. Major Biddle was wounded in the Battle of Newmarket Crossroads on June 30, 1862. He died on July 30, 1862 as a result of the injuries he sustained in this battle.
Mrs. Mary J. Biddle donated a total of $1,900 to the school with the provision that the school be named in memory of her husband. From 1867 to 1876, the school was chartered as the Henry J. Biddle Memorial Institute, until it became Biddle University in 1876.
